Prenatal & Postnatal Massage Therapy

Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pain, and improve labour outcomes and newborn health.

Massage therapy can significantly alter hormone levels associated with stress (Norepinephrine and Cortisol) and relaxation (Dopamine and Serotonin) in the body when introduced to a woman’s parental care. It allows for better mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health. The changes in hormonal level may lead to fewer complications during birth and fewer instances of newborn complications (such as low birth weight).

Edema or swelling of the joints is common during pregnancy and is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on major blood vessels by the heavy uterus. Massage helps stimulate soft tissue to reduce the collection of fluids in swollen joints and improve the removal of tissue waste. Likewise, Sciatic Nerve Pain – experienced by many women during pregnancy, can be treated with massage therapy as the application of proper techniques can reduce the swelling, tension, and inflammation of nerves in the lower back and upper and lower legs.
